OTTAWA / ADDIS ABABA / BUENOS AIRES / SANTIAGO / HAVANA / KINSHASA / RABAT / JOHANNESBURG / DAR ES SALAAM / KAMPALA / LONDON - Two weeks ago, the Delta variant was ripping through the UK, stoking fears of a record wave of COVID-19 clobbering one of the world’s most highly vaccinated countries.

Then, almost overnight, daily cases plummeted, renewing hope that the pandemic’s end - at least in some parts of the world - is within sight.

Now, with the US and much of the world grappling with Delta’s fury, people are looking to the UK for answers about how their respective outbreaks might unfold. But there’s no single answer, as mutations and varied vaccination coverage create conditions for swings in virus rates. While experts agree on some factors in the UK story, they’re also struggling to make sense of what’s truly accounted for the sudden reversal and whether it’s really time to relax.

“This is a remarkably rapid decline and one that few anticipated,” said Martin McKee, professor of European Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, who’s scrutinizing everything from the possibility that young people are skipping COVID-19 tests to older people renewing their commitments to social distancing to the virus running up against a wall of immunity in the country. “Overall, it is a bit of a mystery.”

New daily cases in the UK reached almost 55,000 on July 17, before dropping back below 25,000 earlier this week. The situation shifts day to day, but the weekly trend certainly looks promising.

"Вспышка болезни из единого общего источника - это такая вспышка, при которой группа людей подвергается воздействию инфекционного агента или токсина из одного и того же источника. Если число случаев заболевания нанести на график с абсциссой  по времени эпидемии, то получившаяся кривая  имеет .. обычно крутой подъем и менее резкий постепенный спуск (так называемое "логарифмически нормальное распределение"). Распространение и развитие вспышки заболевания происходит в результате передачи инфекции от одного человека к другому [обычно] при непосредственном контакте человека с человеком . . " Вспышки распространения обычно демонстрируют несколько пиков с интервалами в одну или две недели. Эпидемия в типовом случае затухает после нескольких  подобных циклов.

From the date of the initial outbreak in Wuhan I watched carefully on a daily basis the dispersion and progression of the coronavirus in China and then abroad, collecting as much data as were available on each location. By late May of 2020, China had been infection-free for many weeks, the concern turning to the identification and quarantine of imported cases. At the same time, the US became once again 'the leader of the world', this time in virus infections and deaths, producing 20,000 to 30,000 new cases and around 1,000 deaths per day. At the time, American hostility toward China's success in stopping the virus was palpable, with many nasty media articles and White House accusations about China's false statistics and blaming China for "spreading the virus" to the US. CNN stated, "Chinese state media has repeatedly touted China's effective measures in containing the virus as the number of infections and deaths surged abroad, contrasting its success with the failures of Western governments, especially the United States." (1) Clearly there was much surprise and bitterness at China's success and America's failure, this coated in a sticky layer of resentment based partly on a justified suspicion that the Chinese were not overly distressed at the Americans enjoying the fruits of their own labor.

But even then I had a sense of an apparition, a version of Dickens' 'ghost of coronavirus past', accompanied by an uncomfortable feeling the Americans were sufficiently bitter (and vicious) to deny the Chinese their apparently easy victory. My fear was that the Americans would try to reseed China as they did Russia, and it would seem my fears were not unjustified. The new virus that broke out at the Xinfadi market in Beijing was a different strain than any previously existing in China, one that existed only in the US and Europe and could only have been brought in from the outside. And once again at a seafood market with no identifiable patient zero, no clear epidemiology (source and distribution) of a virus that did not exist in China. It almost had to be deliberately seeded, the odds against being infinitesimally small.

Were COVID-19 and COVID-20 Created in a US Lab?

It was amusing to watch the emergence of this debate on the US-China stage. The Chinese were understandably unwilling to be blamed for the emergence of a virus in which they had no part, and thus reacted strongly to accusations the virus originated in a Wuhan lab. The Americans proved to be even more terrified at the possibility of scientific proof that the virus escaped from one of their bio-labs, and resorted to the only weapon they had which was to turn up the volume on blaming China. There were two main reasons for this state of affairs: (1) The US was the only country known to contain all the varieties that were being spread worldwide. (2) The US is the only nation in the world known to have repeatedly used biological weapons on other countries, beginning with North Korea and never ceasing. Of even more damning consequence is the known locations of about 400 American bio-weapons labs spread throughout the world, to say nothing of the pathetically-lax institution at Fort Detrick. (1) (2) (3)

Moreover, Trump recently claimed he could kill the entire population of Afghanistan within days. "Afghanistan would be wiped off the face of the Earth. It would be gone and this is not using nuclear. It would be over in - literally, in 10 days." Biological weapons would seem the only alternative. Hemorrhagic Fever and Hantavirus worked for the US in North Korea; perhaps also Afghanistan. (4) (5) (6) Mr. Trump later denied intention to carry out his threat, but let's dispense with the fiction of the US having no biological weapons and that Fort Detrick and the 400 foreign labs  are performing only benevolent "peace medicine" functions. If it were China with the above history and SARS, MERS, AIDS, EBOLA, bird flu, swine flu, and COVID-19 first erupted in the US, the Americans would claim this as 100% proof that China was responsible. It cannot be a surprise that much of the world today is naturally tending to lay these outbreaks at America's doorstep.

But returning to our topic of man-made COVID-19 or COVID-20, it seems everyone has been a little too eager to dismiss the possibility (or probability) of these viruses having a (human) helping hand.

Fue divertido ver el surgimiento de este debate en el escenario de EE.UU.-China. Es comprensible que los chinos no quisieran ser culpados por la aparición de un virus con el que no tenían nada que ver, y por lo tanto reaccionaron con fuerza a las acusaciones de que el virus se originó en un laboratorio de Wuhan. Los americanos demostraron estar aún más aterrorizados ante la posibilidad de una prueba científica de que el virus se escapase de uno de sus bio-laboratorios, y recurrieron a la única arma que tenían, que era subir el volumen culpando a China. El Sr. Trump negó más tarde la intención de llevar a cabo su amenaza, pero prescindamos de la ficción de que los EE.UU. no tienen armas biológicas, y que Fort Detrick y los 400 laboratorios en el extranjero sólo realizan funciones benévolas de "medicina para la paz". Si fuera China la que tuviera los antecedentes mencionados, y el SARS, el MERS, el SIDA, el ÉBOLA, la gripe aviar, la gripe porcina y el COVID-19 aparecieran por primera vez en los EE.UU., los estadounidenses afirmarían que eso es una prueba al 100% de que China era responsable. No puede ser sorprendente que gran parte del mundo actual tienda naturalmente a poner estos brotes en las puertas de América.

Pero volviendo a nuestro tema de los COVID-19 o COVID-20 producidos por el hombre, parece que todo el mundo ha estado un poco demasiado ansioso por descartar la posibilidad (o probabilidad) de que estos virus tengan una mano amiga (humana).

If Americans need impetus and justification for a final American Revolution,

this outrageous treason by their own government would seem to qualify.

Masks and Medical Supplies

First, let's accept that the need in March, April and May of 2020 for face masks, respirators and ventilators was urgent and real in every nation, so much so that the US was experiencing enormous blowback from the medical community. There were too many media reports to list, of health care workers refusing to accept shifts without Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), and of many being fired for doing so. Health care workers staged multiple strikes and protests, many after-hours so as to not affect patient care. On May 1, nearly 100,000 nurses staged a protest at nearly 150 hospitals, (1) and this was only one of many such events in response to health care workers being denied compensation or safety leave, being refused protection equipment, and even being forced to work after testing positive for COVID-19. NNU Executive Director Bonnie Castillo said "Nurses signed up to care for their patients. They did not sign up to sacrifice their lives on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic." In reality, the needs for medical supplies, especially in poorer countries, were so desperate that young girls in Afghanistan were scrounging pieces from junk yards, attempting to make ventilators from used car parts, the girls saying "If we even save one life with our device, we will be proud." (2)

On April 20, ABC ran a story titled, "How did the US come up so short on PPE?", (3) claiming experts blamed "the supply chain", but there were literally hundreds of media reports across the US stating that the government simply "wasted two months", waiting until the medical system was breaking before thinking of ordering the supplies that would become so necessary. Of course, much of blame fell on China because factories couldn't manufacture during the outbreak (although they could, and were). And the blame that didn't fall onto China was ladled onto "history", since SARS didn't migrate well to the US and, by extension, COVID-19 should also have stayed in China where it belonged. Politico published an excellent summary titled "Trump called PPE shortages "fake news" (4), that demands reading.

We had President Trump opening his news briefings by dismissing mask and equipment shortages because "Now we’re loaded up. And we also loaded up these hospitals." This, in spite of the fact that by April, the CDC reported nearly 10,000 medical workers ill and scores of deaths that were certainly an undercount. (5) Trump also dismissed NY Governor Cuomo (on Twitter, of all places), saying "I don't believe you need 40,000 or 30,000 ventilators". According to Mr. Trump, hospitals normally have only a few that are not being used, and suddenly they want 30,000. (6) In this same report (and in many others) Mr. Trump also exemplified the astonishing lack of leadership that today appears endemic to the US, saying the US government is "the second line of attack. The first line of attack is supposed to be the hospitals and the local government and the states, the states themselves." In other words, do it yourself.

There was something surreal about the claims being made of "millions of pieces" of medical equipment supplies being distributed, or about to be distributed, or having already been distributed, with absolutely no evidence of such distribution ever actually having taken place. Mr. Trump, Jared Kushner, Mike Pompeo, FEMA and others stated dozens of times in so many press conferences and media reports that many millions of everything were being delivered to hospitals but with no public confirmation ever emerging from the supposed recipients.
