God Save the Queen. Or, Maybe not

Westerners seem to hold a fondness for monarchies; pleasant remembrances of times past, the pleasures of the "court", colloquial recollections of quaint beheadings and the capriciousness of rulings, and envious mention of the 'King's prerogative' on a wedding night. Altogether a generally uncritical recollection.

We tend to think of the British monarchy today, or possibly the smaller incarnations existing in Monaco, the Netherlands or Belgium, rulers who tend now to be not only civilised but also marginalised. But monarchies were not always thus, and rather too many disappeared in the smoke of revolutions because entire populations revolted against the frequent and unpredictable brutality of the rulers, the callous and cynical lack of concern for the populace, and general bad management.

Monarchies and Dictatorships

 

Monarchies and dictatorships are functionally very similar, differing primarily in the method of succession planning, both being a form of government where one person holds absolute power, the exercise of which was not always predictable. Both Monarchies and dictatorships tended to pass power to the next relative in line. The primary difference between the two is that monarchies often claimed a 'divine right' to rule, having been conveniently selected by God, whereas a dictator, sadly but still unashamedly, passed power onto his son. But the only real difference, certainly in the public imagination, is that dictators just didn't have the class of monarchs. There truly is something special about these hard-to-get divine appointments.

 

But our recollections are little more than us having what we might call a convenient and selective memory. We recall what we choose. For downright brutal inhumanity, monarchies have never had much to be proud of. King Leopold of Belgium killed 10-15 million people without hesitation. A Transylvanian prince, eager to explain something to his subjects in a way they could understand, had his soldiers gather 20,000 subjects and chop one arm and one leg off each one. Monarchies were equally as inhuman as were the worst of dictators, and the British were arguably the worst of the lot.

“Os Estados Unidos estão agora a ter consciência das possibilidades de usufruir da posição mais forte que já tivemos em relação ao Irão. Por enquanto, apenas nos abstemos. Mas, para realmente proteger a liberdade, é importante diminuir todos os inimigos. Esse é o objectivo do trabalho do Presidente Trump. Por essa razão é que ele está a tentar tão afincadamente fazer com que o nosso exército seja o mais forte que jamais existiu”, diz o Secretário Geral dos EUA.

Na Rússia, consideram a declaração de Pompeo “inaceitável” e recordam ao político que “essas coisas nunca foram feitas ao nosso país, não o farão agora”.

"Pompeo deve colocar uma lista de ameaças ao peito e andar assim pelo Departamento de Estado. Talvez cheguem a uma conclusão sobre ele. A destruição de um militar russo de alto escalão não importa: na Rússia ou fora dela, estão todos preocupados com um conflito entre potências nucleares. Washington nunca o fará isso”, diz Igor Korotchenko, editor chefe da revista “Национальная оборона”/“Defesa Nacional”.

Pravda/Moscow: The US Secretary of State made an unexpected statement, from which it follows that Washington is ready to “attack Russia” in the same way as it did with Iran when it “liquidated” General Kassem Suleimani.

“The destruction of Suleymani is an example of a new US strategy aimed at deterring its opponents. This applies equally to Iran, China, and Russia,” Reuters quoted Pompeo as saying.

“The states are now realizing the possibilities of the strongest position that we have ever had with regard to Iran. We are just holding it back for now. But in order to truly protect freedom, it is important to restrain all enemies. That’s the whole point of President Trump’s work. That’s why he is trying so hard to make our army the strongest it has ever been, “says the US Secretary-General.

In Russia, they consider Pompeo’s statement “unacceptable” and remind the politician that “such things have never been done with our country, they won’t do it now.”

“Pompeo should attach a list of threats to his chest and walk like that around the State Department. Maybe they will draw conclusions about him. Destruction of a Russian high-ranking military man doesn’t matter: in Russia or outside it is fraught with the onset of a conflict between nuclear powers. Washington will won’t do, “said Igor Korotchenko, editor-in-chief of the National Defense magazine.

Государственный секретарь США сделал неожиданное заявление, из которого следует, что Вашингтон готов "атаковать Россию" так же, как сделал это с Ираном, когда "ликвидировал" генерала Касема Сулеймани.

"Уничтожение Сулеймани — это пример новой стратегии США, направленной на сдерживание своих противников. Это в равной мере касается и Ирана, и Китая, и России", — цитирует Помпео ИА Reuters.

"Штаты сейчас реализуют возможности самой сильной позиции, которая у нас когда-либо была, в отношении Ирана. Мы пока просто сдерживаем его. Но чтобы защитить свободу по-настоящему, важно сдерживать всех врагов. В этом весь смысл работы президента Трампа. Именно поэтому он так старается сделать нашу армию самой сильной, какой она когда-либо была", — говорит генеральный секретарь США.

В России считают заявление Помпео "неприемлемым" и напоминают политику, что "подобные штуки с нашей страной не проходили никогда, не пройдут и теперь".

"Помпео стоит прикрепить список угроз себе на грудь и ходить в таком виде по Госдепу. Может, там про него выводы сделают. Уничтожение российского высокопоставленного военного, неважно: в России или за ее пределами — чревато началом конфликта между ядерными державами. На это Вашингтон никогда не пойдет", — говорит Игорь Коротченко, главред журнала "Национальная оборона"
